BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

high

Breeding conditions:

Spring started in normal time for the territory, while in 3 previous years (1997-99) it was delayed at 7-12 days. Feeding conditions were favourable judging by amount of fat carried by birds. Arctic Foxes were rare. Numbers of voles increased substantially, which allowed Rough-legged Buzzards and Skuas to raise chicks. Bird breeding conditions were the most favourable from 1997, and reproductive success (of geese, ducks and waders, in particular) - the maximal. However, human influence on some easily accessible colonies of geese and Common Eider increased during last years, as local people practice egg collection. Also oil and gas exploration can be resumed in the area.
